The Codex Gigas, often called the Devil’s Bible, is the largest medieval manuscript in the world, created in the early 13th century in a Benedictine monastery in Bohemia (modern-day Czech Republic). Weighing over 75 kilograms (165 pounds) and written on 310 pages of vellum, it is a masterpiece of medieval craftsmanship and scholarship. The manuscript contains a complete Latin Bible alongside a diverse collection of texts, including historical chronicles, medical treatises, magical spells, and penitential writings. Its most famous feature is a full-page illustration of the devil, which has sparked legends and earned it a reputation as a cursed or mystical object.Myth surrounds its creation, claiming it was written by a monk named Herman the Recluse in a single night with the devil’s assistance. However, experts believe it was the work of one scribe over many years. The Codex Gigas is currently housed in the National Library of Sweden in Stockholm, where it continues to fascinate scholars and enthusiasts alike with its size, history, and enigmatic contents.
