From County Mayo, Ireland to Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania is the story of five Irish families who sailed across the Atlantic, knowing they would never return. Through parish records, old maps, family photographs, and stories retold, the author, Ruth Ann Sando, brings their lives into sharp, human focus. The journey begins in the 1800s in the windswept fields of County Mayo where hunger, loss, and hardship, during and after the Potato Famine, drove the Irish Diaspora. These intrepid refugees crossed from Ireland to England and then to America, rebuilding their lives in the coal towns of Dunmore and Scranton, Pennsylvania. As a consequence of their exhausting and hazardous work in the mines and at home, they created the possibility for their descendants to prosper in comfort. This book is valuable for anyone tracing Irish roots and is a moving portrait of resilience. It honors the families who refused to give up and the legacy they created for future generations and America. Read more
