Fire King™ Hornbeam

Why it rocks:

Fire King™ Hornbeam is a remarkably cold-hardy ornamental tree, making it an excellent choice for landscape projects in the Chicagoland area. Also known as Fire King® Musclewood, this tree was skillfully developed by Mike Yanny of Johnson Nursery Inc. in the early 2000s. Renowned for its exceptional cold hardiness, clean architectural form, and vigorous growth rate, Fire King™ Hornbeam features striking small, serrated dark green leaves. Its strong branching supports a rounded canopy that adds richness and texture to your outdoor space. The real enchantment occurs in autumn when the tree showcases a breathtaking display of fiery red and orange hues, transforming your landscape into a vibrant masterpiece each year. Additionally, its yellow-green catkins and red-orange nutlets, which mature to a chestnut brown, attract charming songbirds and butterflies, enhancing biodiversity and bringing life to your yard. Planting Fire King™ Hornbeam offers unmatched beauty, generous shade, and privacy. This tree is a valuable investment for your landscape, promising to delight for years to come.

Where to put it:

Fire King™ Hornbeam will enhance your home’s privacy while simultaneously adding visual interest as an accent tree. It is especially well-suited for small landscapes and garden spaces. This tree not only brings a lively burst of color but also creates a peaceful atmosphere with its screening abilities, making it perfect for backyards, particularly near patios and decks. It acts as a stunning, colorful backdrop along property lines and, thanks to its excellent shade tolerance, can be paired with larger shade trees. Fire King™ Hornbeam's natural beauty and robust, rounded shape make it an ideal choice for parks, cemeteries, and memorial gardens seeking to diversify the tree line. When planting this tree, ensure it is situated about 10 feet away from nearby structures to allow its full, rounded form to flourish as it matures.

What it needs:

Fire King™ Hornbeam is happiest in full sun and will grow in full shade making it one of the most shade tolerant trees available. However, full sun exposure is recommended for optimal fall color. This tree also tolerates various Chicagoland soil conditions and is low maintenance. Be sure to follow our tree care instructions for the first few growing seasons until the root system is well-established.
