Circulation Spaces in Contemporary Architecture

The winding paths of ants and the intricate stories of city streets reveal how movement is shaped by forces beyond mere efficiency. In architecture, however, circulation is often viewed as a technical requirement—corridors, stairs, and ramps—designed for easy passage. But what if we viewed these spaces not just as neutral connectors, but as dynamic environments that respond to the complexity of human experience? In Circulation Spaces in Contemporary Architecture, Jacklynn Niemiec reframes circulation as a layered, living framework that communicates values, supports agency, and adapts over time. Through recent case studies from around the globe—from schools in China to libraries in Spain—she examines how circulation can promote inclusivity, sensory engagement, and spatial memory. This book is a call to design with greater empathy and imagination—where a stair is the difference between inclusion and exclusion, and a corridor could carry the stories of many.Drawing from architecture, neuroscience, and design theory, Niemiec invites architects, interior designers, students, and readers interested in the built environment to reconsider the spaces in between. Whether you design buildings or simply navigate them, this is an invitation to see circulation spaces as connective, temporal spaces that link people, context, and change. Read more
