Catalogue of Rubbings of Brasses and Incised Slabs, (Hardcover)

"Catalogue of Rubbings of Brasses and Incised Slabs" is a comprehensive scholarly resource compiled by the Victoria and Albert Museum's Department of Engraving, Illustration, and Design. This detailed catalogue serves as a vital record of one of the most significant collections of monumental brass rubbings and incised stone markers in the world. These rubbings provide a unique window into the past, capturing the intricate artistry of medieval and post-medieval commemorative monuments that define the floors and walls of historical European churches.

The work organizes and classifies a vast array of specimens, making it an essential reference for historians, genealogists, and enthusiasts of ecclesiastical art. By documenting these rubbings, the catalogue preserves the details of heraldry, period costume, and epigraphy that are often worn away on the original stone and metal surfaces over time. Each entry highlights the stylistic evolution of these monuments, offering insights into the social and artistic values of the eras they represent. Whether for academic study or personal interest in decorative arts, "Catalogue of Rubbings of Brasses and Incised Slabs" stands as an authoritative guide to a unique form of historical preservation and British heritage.

This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
